A Notary Public is someone, commissioned by the state, who acts as an official, impartial witness to deter fraudulent activity by witnessing and authenticating the signing of important documents. The Notary is required to verify the identity of signers by reviewing their government issued photo ID's, confirm that the signers are willingly signing the document are not being pressured to do so, and ensure that signers are mentally aware of what they are signing and agreeing to. The Notary will complete and stamp a notarial certificate validating the signature(s).

Satisfactory evidence of the identity of an individual can be confirmed through a valid passport, driver’s license, or government-issued nondriver identification card. Any other form of government identification that is currently valid, contains the individual’s signature or a photograph of the individual, and is satisfactory to the notary may also be used. In the absence of an ID, a verification on oath of a credible witness personally appearing before the notary can be used. The credible witness must provide a passport, driver’s license, or government-issued nondriver identification card that is current or expired not more than three years.
